You are reading a PDF, and something needs attention. A wrong amount on an invoice. A clause in an agreement you want to question. A diagram where you need to point at one part. Typing a note does not always help. Sometimes you just need to circle it, underline it or draw an arrow.

The free InstantToolsPro PDF Editor has a Draw tool for exactly this. It gives you four ways to mark up a page: Pen, Line, Arrow and Oval, with a choice of colours and a size slider. No app, no account.

What Is the Draw Tool?

The Draw tool lets you add freehand and shaped marks directly on your PDF, the digital version of marking a printout with a pen. You will find Draw in the left tool list, below Watermark. When you open it, a panel shows four modes at the top, then Color and Size controls.

When Should You Use It?

  • Reviewing documents: Circle errors, underline key terms and point to changes.
  • Teachers and students: Mark answers, underline important lines, and circle mistakes in a worksheet.
  • Forms and applications: Draw an arrow to the field that needs attention or circle the option you chose.
  • Diagrams and maps: Point at one part of a floor plan, chart or screenshot saved as PDF.
  • Quick feedback: Mark up a design or document and send it back with your comments visible.
  • Study notes: Underline and circle key points in lecture notes or e-books.
  • Contracts and agreements: Mark a clause you want to discuss before signing.

The Four Draw Modes

Pen

Pen is for freehand drawing. Use it to underline a word, circle something loosely, write a short note by hand or sketch a quick mark. On a phone it feels like writing on paper with your finger. On a laptop, a trackpad gives smoother lines than a mouse.

Line

Line draws a straight line between two points. This is the best choice when you want a neat underline, a strike-through or a divider. A straight line looks more professional than a shaky freehand underline.

Arrow

Arrow draws a line with an arrowhead. Use it to point at a figure, a name, a signature box or any detail you want the reader to notice. Arrows are the clearest way to say “look here” without writing a word.

Oval

Oval draws an oval or circle. Use it to highlight a number, a date or a short phrase. It gives a cleaner circle than you can draw by hand, which is useful for the amount on an invoice or a checkbox option.

Colour and Size

Colour: Pick from black, blue, red or green. A small extra colour swatch sits beside the main four. Colour carries meaning, so choose it on purpose:

  • Red: errors, corrections, things that need attention
  • Green: correct answers, approved items
  • Blue: neutral notes and comments
  • Black: clean underlines and general marks

Size: The Size slider sets how thick your stroke is. In the panel it starts at 3. Use a thin stroke for underlines and small text, and a thicker stroke for arrows and circles that need to stand out on a busy page.

Step by Step: Draw on a PDF

Step 1: Open the PDF Editor. Go to the free PDF Editor and upload your PDF.

Step 2: Click Draw. Find Draw in the left tool list. The Draw panel opens.

Step 3: Choose a mode. Pick Pen, Line, Arrow or Oval.

Step 4: Pick a colour. Black, blue, red or green.

Step 5: Set the size. Move the slider to make the stroke thinner or thicker.

Step 6: Draw on the page. Drag on the page where you want the mark. Use Undo if it does not look right and try again.

Step 7: Repeat as needed. Change the mode, colour or size for each new mark.

Step 8: Download. Review your pages, then press Download to save the marked-up PDF.

Example: Marking Errors on an Invoice

  1. Open the invoice in the PDF Editor and click Draw.
  2. Choose Oval, pick red, and circle the wrong amount.
  3. Switch to Arrow and point from the circle to the correct figure.
  4. Download the file and send it back with your comments visible.

Example: Marking a Worksheet

  1. Open the worksheet and click Draw.
  2. Choose Line in green and underline the correct answers.
  3. Choose Oval in red and circle the mistakes.
  4. Download the marked copy for your student.

Tips for Clean Mark-Up

  • Zoom in on busy pages so your circle or arrow lands exactly where you want it.
  • Use Line for underlines. It is neater than freehand.
  • Do not cover text. Draw around a word, not over it, so it stays readable.
  • Stick to a colour system. For example, red for problems and green for correct, so your meaning is clear.
  • Do not overdo it. A few clear marks help more than a page full of scribbles.
  • Keep an unmarked copy. Save your original before you draw on it.

Draw vs Highlight vs Shape vs Text: Which Should You Use?

The editor has several tools that look similar, so here is the difference:

  • Draw is for quick marks: freehand pen, straight line, arrow and oval.
  • Highlight colours over text, like a highlighter pen.
  • Shape adds boxes and other shapes you can place and resize.
  • Text adds typed notes. Use it when your comment needs to be readable, not just a mark.
  • Edit text changes the text that is already in the PDF. See how to edit text in a PDF.

Many people combine them: circle something with Draw, then add a short note with Text.

Combine Draw with Other Tools

Note that Draw only adds marks on top of the page. It does not hide anything underneath. If a page has private details, use Redact instead. See how to redact a PDF.

Works on Mobile Too

You can draw on a PDF in your phone’s browser. A finger works well for the Pen mode. Zoom in before placing arrows and circles and use Undo and Redo if a mark lands in the wrong spot.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes the fastest way to explain something is to circle it or point at it. With the Draw tool you can mark up any PDF in a minute, without printing, scanning or installing anything.
